Richard Serra : touch me.

A sign told me it’s not allowed to touch the work itself. Even a clean hand can damage the surface.
The guard yelled behind me, “No touching, ” and then continued “no smiling, no dancing, no swimming...”

However, the environment sent out different messages to me.

There is another Richard Serra exhibition in the outdoor garden in MoMA. It’s still similar shapes, similar curves, and similar paths.

It’s different because the temperature made the whole sculpture inviting to audience’s touch. MoMA is open from 10:30 to 5:30. I was there thirty minutes before closing. The sculpture showed me the temperature in New York. The closer I was, the more I felt the hot message.

Yes, indeed. I didn’t touch the sculpture by hand. But the guard didn’t stop me while my cheek was on the surface. I put my cheeks beside and slightly, feeling the message.
